The use and benefits of massage have evolved dramatically over the past decade. The use of massage in complementary and alternative medicine practices is now widely recognized and has become a critical element in patient care. There are a wide variety of massage genres that are now a part of evidence based practices based on empirical studies where the benefits are measurable. Massage therapy can be used to treat wide variety of ailments. The most common are headaches, low back pain, tennis elbow, sciatica, and knee pain. Clinical massage treatments are more specific, less relaxing than spa massage, and usually require client feedback and participation during treatment. It is not uncommon to spend the full treatment time working on one area of the body. Goals for each treatment include reducing trigger point activity, increasing circulation, flexibility and strength, and working towards achieving optimum body alignment. Multiple sessions are usually needed with progression happening each session. Consecutive sessions (either multiple times per week, or weekly) will yield better results as benefits are compounded. As with all massage modalities, you should never exceed the “hurt so good” feeling. Pressure that is painful causes muscle tissue to resist and is therefore counterproductive. Be sure to communicate clearly to your therapist regarding pressure during treatment.
Whether you are a weekend warrior, amateur or professional athlete, there may be a time when a sports massage will apply to you. Sports massage can either be used to prevent injury, or to rehabilitate current injuries. Using therapeutic assessment to determine the specific muscle or muscle groups that are causing you pain, your therapist will perform a combination of massage strokes to increase circulation, realign fibers, and decrease pain to the area. In addition to massage, passive and active stretching and strengthening exercises will be incorporated to prolong the benefits of massage. As with all massage modalities, you should never exceed the “hurt so good” feeling. Pressure that is painful causes muscle tissue to resist and is therefore counterproductive. Be sure to communicate clearly to your therapist regarding pressure during treatment.
Relaxation / Swedish Massage
The relaxation massage is for clients who are looking for time to themselves to reconnect with their bodies. A relaxation massage consists of long purposeful strokes with kneading that help to “milk” the tissues to increase circulation and promote a general good over all feeling. This massage is a tool for those who are experiencing stress, having sleep problems, anxiety, or have an overall body soreness.
Pregnancy places increased strains on the skeleton, muscles, connective tissue and organs. Massage has been shown to reduce or alleviate the pain and discomfort from these stresses. The University of Miami, Touch Research Institute is dedicated solely to research on the medical benefits from touch therapy. One study showed clear benefits to prenatal massage.
Core De Vie massage therapists employ specific muscle and tissue work to help you toward a more comfortable pregnancy. Prenatal massage draws from the the same techniques as other massage styles and are used in a specific manner.
An organic modality based in exposing an individual to the healing environment in order to harmonize body systems and optimize overall wellness. It’s unique qualities combine elements of meditation and conceptual practices to activate natural processes of the body. Originating in Japan in the early 1900’s, Reiki is seen as a form of cultivating health and personal development using universal life force. During a treatment the recipients focus is guided into a relaxed and perceptive state of mind. Once accumulated into a restful state, it becomes easier for the body to recognize and communicate with areas of differential. When feeling these forms of communication, one may have a sense of spiritual energy, waves of heat or cold, settling emotions, polarity balance, stomach growling, goose bumps and even possible color visualizations. All of which are recognized forms of “energetic release” or motion.
